Keep out of reach of children” is a popular phrase present on many household cleaners and products. Many of the chemicals that we use to keep our homes clean are harmful when ingested. Some are even harmful when they are inhaled. Essential oils have powerful effects that make it possible to clean and sanitize your home without using these harmful chemicals.
Tea tree oil has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. It has the ability to naturally clean any surface in your home.
A multi-purpose cleaner can easily be made with 1 teaspoon of tea t ree oil mixed with 1 gallon of water. Place the solution in a spray bottle and use it to clean your kitchen, bathrooms, floors, etc. This cleaner is not only healthier to use in your home but it is also a lot cheaper than the multi-purpose cleaners that you buy from the store.
Another way to save money and keep your family clean and healthy is by making your own laundry soap while including some tea tree oil in the mixture. You will need a 10 gallon bucket, one bar of grated fels naptha soap, 1 large box of borax, a 3 pound box of washing soda and 1 Tablespoon of tea tree essential oil. Melt the fels naptha soap in 4 cups of water. Place the solution in the bucket and fill it up with 5 gallons of water. Mix well. Stir in the borax, washing soda and tea tree oil. Put 5 more gal lons of water in the bucket. Mix well and leave it to sit overnight. You can use about 2/3 a cup with each laundry load. The soap, borax and washing soda will get your clothes clean while the tea tree oil will eliminate all the bacteria and viruses that may be on the clothes. The tea tree oil will also make your clothes smell wonderful.
Another cleaner that you can make is a disinfectant spray. Combine ½ cup vinegar, 2 cups hot water, 1 teaspoon washing soda and 10 drops of tea tree oil in a spray bottle. Shake up the solution to combine and you can use this spray to safely disinfect your home.
Do you have a problem with mold or mildew in your house? Tea tree oil is a fungicide which means that it can naturally get rid of mold and mildew. Make a cleaning solution with ½ cup water ½ cup vinegar and 20 drops of tea tree oil. Scrub the infected area thoroughly until the mold or mildew is gone.
If bugs are a problem in your home you can make a bug spray that will eliminate them without putting harmful chemicals in your home. Combine ½ cup vinegar with ½ cup apple cider vinegar and 50 drops of tea tree oil. You can also use peppermint and citronella oils in combination with the tea tree oil. Use it in a spray bottle to get rid of your pest problem.
Tea tree oil is helpful around the home. Using the solutions above you will not only keep your home clean but you will keep your family safe from chemicals.
Have you ever tried a Neti pot?
A neti pot is a way to clean out your nasal passages. In technical terms it is a nasal saline irrigation procedure. This procedure can be done at home and it is even recommended by some to be a part of your daily routine.
To use a Neti, you combine 1 pint water (use distilled or boiled water) with 1 teaspoon salt. Fill the pot with this saline solution and then tilt your head to the side. While leaning over a sink or tub, pour the contents of your Neti pot through one nostril. The fluid will flow through one nostril and out the other. As it flows through your nasal passage, it will help clear out excess mucus, allergens and irritants.
A type of Neti pot has been used for thousands of years. They were used in ancient India. It was a part of a cleansing technique in Hatha yoga. People of this day would use them to clear out the third eye. By cleaning out this third eye one would have a clear head and would experience an extrasensory perception.
Today there are many surgeons and celebrities that endorse the use of a Neti pot. They use it because every day you breathe in toxins and pollutants. These toxins enter in through your nasal passage. If you don’t clean your nose daily, these pollutants will stay there. Many compare it to the necessity to brush your teeth every day. While you need to have good dental hygiene in order to stay healthy, you should also have good nasal hygiene.
The Neti pot has withstood the test of time and many endorse the use of it; but it may not be as beneficial as we are led to believe. About ten percent of users experience irritation, stinging and nosebleeds. It is also possible that through the use of a Neti pot, you are introducing more bacteria into your body.
In order to avoid this bacterial induction, make sure that you use distilled or boiled water in your Neti pot. You also need to clean your Neti pot after each use in order to kill bacteria. Just like your toothbrush, you need to replace your Neti pot every 6 months or so. While the Neti pot is effective in removing allergens and irritants it may also remove beneficial agents in your nasal passage. Within your nasal are antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral agents. The direct application of saline will dilute these beneficial agents and may even wash them away. This will cause you to get sick even more often. While the Neti pot may seem like a beneficial product, it may be doing more harm than good. It is best to use this product in moderation at times when you really need to clear your nose.
The Malaleuca tree is commonly known as tea tree known for its natural soothing and cleansing properties. The Malaleuca tree is native to Australia and New Zealand. However, it also has been introduced to other parts of the world.
The Melaleuca (Melaleuca alternifolia ) tree, is a genus of plants in the myrtle family Myrtaceae . Also known as punk tree or paper bark tree is an important part of the Australian landscape with powerful medicinal qualities can be distilled and used as an essential oil, more commonly called tea tree oil. Melaleuca is an evergreen tree, growing to about 80 feet tall. Its bark is whitish, spongy, peeling, and in many layers. Its leaves are to 5 inches long, alter nate alternately arranged, ovate to lanceolate, evergreen, simple, short-stalked, narrowly elliptic . Leaf veins are more or less parallel. The white flowers are small and crowded in bottlebrush-like spikes at branch tips. The fruit are short, cylindrical or squarish, woody capsules with many tiny seeds. The flowers are produced in dense clusters along the stems, each flower with fine small petals and a tight bundle of stamens.
The tree thrives in warm, moist climates. It has be grown as a monoculture in the southern states of the United States (USDA hardiness zones 8-11), where it ’s warm and humid for most of the year.
The Melaleuca tree is commonly found growing along waterways and in swamps. Although, the tree is drought tolerant. Produces huge quantities of seeds, which become small trees, which grow into almost impenetrable forest, such as in the state of Florida where the trees are more of a pest and has now classified them as an invasive species.
There are well over 200 recognized species of the Melaleuca tree with each species varying slightly. Some species grow more like shrubs while others grow to become large trees. Certain species can be distinguished by their paper-like bark. The tree blooms beautifully and depending on the species may bloom in white, pink, red or green.
When British explorer James Cook landed in southeast Australia in 1770, he observed local Aborigines brewing the “tea tree” leaves as a tea. Impressed by the tea, he gathered leaves for the use of his crew throughout the remainder of his voyages.
The Melaleuca tree should not be confused with a tea tree that supplies black and green tea. Often, the Melaleuca leaves are used strictly for medicinal purposes and aren’t intended to be ingested frequently.
If you’re wishing to grow your own Melaleuca, you can buy seeds that you can plant or you can propagate a new tree from the branches of an existing one.
Tree oil is potent and useful. If you have access to tea tree leaves, you may be able to distill some oil from the leaves in your own home.
Tea trees are native to Australia. The tree can also survive in tropical climates where it is warm and humid. If you have access to these leaves you can use the leaves to create your oil. This article will review the process of steam distillation and distillation using a still.
Remember before you begin to take the necessary safety precautions. This oil may be volatile and may irritate your skin if exposed to it in large amounts. Wear safety goggles and gloves when distilling your oil.
Steam distillation can be done using items in your own kitchen. You will need a pot with a lid, a vegetable steamer, a glass measuring cup, some water and ice and a separating funnel. The separating funnel can be
purchased online and looks like the picture below.
Once you have all your materials place the tea tree leaves in the pot and cover them with water. Place your vegetable steamer on top of the leaves/water in order to create a flat surface. In the middle of the steamer place a measuring cup. Put the lid on the pot upside-down so that the handle is in the measuring cup. Boil the water. Place ice cubes on the top of the lid to aid with the condensation inside.
Once all the ice is melted, turn off the burner and remove the lid. Pour everything from the measuring cup into the separating funnel. Shake the funnel and then wait for the contents inside to settle. You will see the separation inside between the water and the oil.
Open the valve on the bottom and release the water. You will be left with the oil that you can store in a separate container.
The second way to distill your tea tree oil is by using a still. Stills can be purchased online and look like the picture below.
Begin the process by pouring water into the distil lation beaker. Fill the upper container with as many tea tree leaves as you can. Start a low water flow into your condenser and turn on the heat under your water. Leave the heat on for thirty minutes, or more.
Turn off the heat and pour off any water caught in the container that caught your tea tree oil. Store your oil to use whenever you wish.
The process of distillation is rather simple but if you live in cold climates you may find it difficult to obtain fresh leaves from the tea tree. If this is the case, it may be easier and cheaper to buy your oil already made.

Essential oils are pure, extracted oils that come from parts of plants. They are natural and safe to use, but they are also very potent. Body Essential oils are strong because they are in a pure form. While you can apply the oil in its neat state (without any carrier oil), it is not recommended. You should consider diluting your oil it with a carrier oil. If you choose to use an essential oil undiluted, than you need to be aware that permanent sensitization may occur.
Sensitization is when you develop a skin allergy or rash and in severe cases you could develop respiratory issues or anaphylactic shock when exposed to the oil. This sensitization will occur every time you come in contact with the oil. To be safe, make sure you dilute your oils every time you use them. A 2% dilution is recommended. A 2% dilution would be 1 teaspoon of a carrier oil and 2 drops of your essential oil; 1 Tablespoon of a carrier oil and 6 drops of an essential oil; 1 fluid ounce of a carrier oil and 12 drops of an essential oil.
There are many carrier oils that you can use.
Four possibie carrier oils are: Coconut oil, Grapeseed oil, Jojoba oil and Olive oil.
- Coconut oil. This oil never goes rancid, it has a great shelf life and will last as long as your oils will. It is odorless, colorless and it won’t stain your clothes. It absorbs easily into your skin and is also a great moisturizer but it doesn’t feel greasy when you put it on.
You can also choose Virgin coconut oil which is solid at room temperature. Virgin coconut oil is said to have added health and wellness attributes that work with your oils to help heal .
- Grapeseed oil is extracted from the seeds of grapes. It has many beneficial qualities including: a good moisturizer, a good lubricant for massage or shaving and it is also has astringent properties. Grapeseed oil does not saturate as quickly into your skin and you will have an oily feel after using it.
- Jojoba oil not only nourishes your skin but it is said to resemble a lot of the oils that are naturally in your skin. It feels natural to have it on and it absorbs into the skin easily.
- Olive oil is perhaps the most common of all the carrier oils. This oil is high in vitamins and minerals. While it may leave you feeling a little oily after use, it is great for massage and also is an effective hair conditioner.
Choose a carrier oil and combine it with your essential oil. With an oil that you use often, make up a dilution and store it in a bottle to use when you need it. By having a pre-made diluted oil, you can apply it quickly and not have to worry about possible sensitization.
I first got interested in Tea Tree Essential Oil after checking out The Dr Oz Show and learning how to give my medicine cabinet a boost by throwing out old, expired prescriptions and over the counter remedies to make space for his top essentials. Dr Oz recommends Tea Tree Essential Oil as the number one essential! ''No medicine cabinet should be without Tea tree oil'' he says. Here is why...
It is believed that the Aborigines of Australia have been using the leaves of the indigenous Malaleuca Tree in their medications for centuries. They inhaled the oils from crushed leaves to treat coughs and colds, sprinkled crushed leaves on their wounds and used an infusion of soaked leaves to treat sore throats or skin ailments. Tea Tree has so many anti-viral and anti-fungal benefits that today the Australian army puts it in soldiers' first aid kits. Because the benefits of Tea Tree oil are so recognized, it is no doubt one of the most popular essential oils of all times. It's most known for it's antiseptic, antifungal and antimicrobial properties.
So if you are anything like me, I'm sure you have a medicine cabinet loaded with stuff, all promising something or the other, but never ever providing without some silly side effect. Well I reached the point where I just had to stop with it all, turn to more natural remedies and take my health into my own two hands.
I started using essential oils, and Tea Tree was number one. I mean no home should be without Tea Tree oil, it sorts out most viral, bacterial and fungal infections in a snap, while it is great to clean wounds and also relieves muscle aches and pains. To top that it is also a powerful immune system stimulant. But my first experience with Tea Tree began when I was faced with a nail fungus that would not go away. The pharmaceutical solutions presented to me were harsh and actually required frequent monitoring of liver enzymes and I thought ''No thanks!'' especially for a simple, non-life threatening nail fungus. Would you believe it, after using a topical application of Tea Tree oil for 3 months the fungus completely disappeared? I did have to be patient but it was totally worth it.
Since then I have become very interested in aromatherapy (which uses essential oils) and have started to use it for a variety of woes. I must say, I have never been disappointed. But the one oil I use most just has to be Tea Tree oil, I would recommend that you get some and use it to keep your family and your home in tip top shape.
How to select the right brand of tea tree oil Before you buy essential oil, always do your brand research! Not all essential oils are created equal - many are diluted or contaminated. It is best to buy from reputable brands that sell their essential oils in small amber or cobalt bottles. My favorite brand WellnesScent only has premium, certified organic and 100 % pure essential oils. They are even offering a fab free Ebook with each of their oils, which is absolutely fabulous when you are starting out like me.
Healthy happy living to you all!
Chapped lips and hands? Let tea tree essential oil help heal your dried skin. Not only is it healing but tea tree will also help keep away the bacteria and germs that often jump around in the holidays.
In the winter time it is quite common to suffer from chapped lips and skin because of the cold. At Christmas we might enjoy being outdoors perhaps caroling, searching for a perfect Christmas tree or ice skating. Simply going out to the car or bus can catch our lips in that icy cold wind! Luckily, tea tree oil is a natural balsamic; another word for balsamic is balm which is a fragrant ointment used as medication. Tea tree oil is an ointment that can heal your coarse lips and flaky skin.
This holiday season try making your own healing lip balm using tea tree oil and why not make a few batches to give away as gifts? You will need 1 cup of beeswax pellets (you can buy these at an online retailer), 3 tablespoons coconut oil, 1 teaspoon vitamin E oil, and 2-3 drops of tea tree oil. You can also add 2-3 drops of peppermint oil to give those lips a fresh minty twist. Peppermint and tea tree essential oil blend well together. Melt the beeswax pellets and coconut oil in a double boiler. Once melted, take off the heat, add your essential oil and then stir well. You can find empty lip balm tins online for really cheap. Fill them quickly and allow to cool before putting on the lids. Decorate with labels and stickers, and give some away as thoughtful gifts this Christmas!
Tea tree oil is not only a balsamic but it is also an anti-bacterial and this is especially important during the holiday season. A great product to make as backup for your whole family, is a moisturizing, anti-bacterial hand soap (super easy to make and best of all without any nasty chemicals like the ones you get in the shops). This will not only keep your hands moisturized but it will also wash those lurking germs far away.
The items you will need are: a glass or plastic soap container with a pump (you can reuse an old one or purchase cheaply online), Castile soap (go for the extra mild, gentle liquid soap made from certified organic ingredients that you can find online) 2 tablespoons almond oil, 1 tablespoon vegetable glycerin (this will be your moisturizer), and your choice of essential oils. Our favorite is 10-15 drops of tea tree oil and 10- 15 drops of lavender essential oil. Place all the ingredients in your container and then fill it to the top with distilled water. Mix it together with some vigorous shakes and your hand soap is ready to use.
Another fantastic tip to protect yourself and your family this holiday season is to make your own hand sanitizer to take with you when you are out and about to ensure you don’t pick up any viruses or bacteria. Now making your own has added benefits because you can use all natural ingredients including your pure tea tree essential oil which has powerful anti-bacterial properties. Purchased hand sanitizers often have a very high concentration of alcohol (which can be very irritating to the skin) and other nasty chemicals like triclosan (considered a human carcinogen and has also been linked to other health problems). Your home-made sanitizer will last for about a month. You will need: 1 tablespoon witch hazel, 8 ounces of aloe vera gel, 25-30 drops of tea tree oil and 9 drops of lavender oil. Mix all these ingredients together and store it in a small, capped container.
Staying healthy and happy this holiday season has never been this easy with tea tree oil! Use these super easy recipes for money saving yet thoughtful gifts for your friends and family.
Merry Christmas and have a healthy New Year!
It’s the holidays and what a great time for family and friends to visit! Whether they come for the day or stay for a week, I would like to share with you some handy tips to prepare your home using lavender essential oil.
Lavender essential oil has antibacterial and antiviral properties that help disinfect and clean your home naturally, it also leaves it smelling fresh and wonderful. Did you know that you can use lavender oil to make your own super effective cleaning products? Making your own is way cheaper and so much healthier for you and your family.
Nowadays everyone is waking up and realizing that purchased cleaning products contain a host of nasty chemicals we just don’t want in our homes anymore. So here’s a list of my favorite simple DIY home recipes for cleaning products using lavender essential oil. Most of the extra ingredients you will probably already have in your home.
Try these out:
Anti-bacterial spray. Use this spray in your kitchen to wipe down your counters. To make it all you need is 1 cup of filtered water with 20 drops of lavender essential oil. Combine these two ingredients in a spray bottle and shake to use it when needed. You can use it to spruce up your freshly washed linen or upholstered furniture. Simply spray on your couch, pillows, sheets and allow to air dry. This will leave them fresh smelling and spell bad news for any lingering bacteria!
All purpose cleaner . This is one that you can use for heavier cleaning jobs. Use it in your bathroom or to deep clean your kitchen. As you make this solution be be aware that the combination of ingredients will cause a chemical reaction (when you mix the baking soda and vinegar together, it’s going to bubble!) Combine: 3 tablespoons vinegar with ½ teaspoon baking soda, ½ cup liquid castile soap (a type of soap made from plant oils, a “true soap” not simply a chemical detergent making it sensitive on skin, bio-degradable and earth-friendly), 2 cups hot water, 15 drops of lavender essential oil and 15 drops tea tree essential oil. Combine these in a spray bottle and use when needed.
Grease cutter solution. This is a great one to clean out your oven or the top of your stove after cooking that Christmas meal. Combine 2 cups water, 1 cup liquid castile soap and 10 drops of lavender oil. Use in a spray bottle.
Carpet freshener. This is a powder solution, that you sprinkle on your carpets to freshen your room. You can also use it on your mattress or upholstered furniture. Combine 5 drops of lavender essential oil with one cup of baking soda in a container and mix well. Sprinkle it on the area you choose and leave for at least half an hour. Then vacuum it up. You will love your homes fresh lavender smell and so will your guests.
Using lavender in your home has a few more added be nefits. You see lavender is also used in aromatherapy for its calming effect on the body and mind. Remember not to get too stressed out if Christmas tends to get a bit hectic for you. Treat yourself and your husband each evening with a hot bath and diffuse your bedroom with lavender oil to help you unwind.
If you are planning on having overnight guests for the holiday, diffuse some lavender oil in the room that they will be sleeping in. This will help them relax and get a good night sleep.
Lavender essential oil is my absolute favorite because it is so versatile. I hope you find that you can use these tips to help you prepare for the holidays and keep calm and relaxed throughout the festive season.
Merry Christmas and a have hap py healthy New Year!
Frankincense essential oil has a long and regal history that dates back centuries.
According to the bible it is a holy oil, the baby Jesus was given three gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh by the three wise men. Today recent research is revealing the true power of this original Christmas present. Frankincense oil has the incredible ability to heal scars, stretch marks and even eliminate wrinkles. From cell regeneration to reducing age spots and healing wounds its healing ability is unrivalled.
Today this wonder oil is used in famous and expensive beauty products all the time to help heal skin, making it look flawless and beautiful. But trust me, you don’t have to spend a fortune on these big brand products to take advantage of the Frankincense magic. Personally I buy my own pure organic Frankincense essential oil and make my own beauty products at very reasonable cost, and best of all I can make extra for my friends and family!
Frankincense oil has cytophylactic qualities, which means it naturally helps stimulate skin cell regeneration. You can use it to make your own healing cream, apply and use to visibly reduce wrinkles, stretch marks, and scars. Here’s a recipe for a healing cream that I find absolutely luxurious and which will also make an awesome homemade Christmas gift for someone really special.
Frankincense blends well with other essential oils (like Lavender for example) so go ahead and add a few drops of your favorite if you feel like it. In a double boiler melt 1 cup shea butter and ½ cup organic coconut oil. 1. Once melted take the mixture off the heat and let it come to room temperature. 2. Add ¼ cup of almond oil, ½ teaspoon Vitamin E oil ( you can buy vitamin E capsules that you can open and get the oil from) and 40 drops of Frankincense essential oil. 3. Transfer the mixture to an electric mixer bowl. 4. Whisk until it is thickened. 5. Store in a mason jar with a tight lid or even squirt bottle. Decorate with a label, a sticker or a ribbon if you plan to give away as a gift.
Another easy recipe that you can make at home is a Frankincense sugar scrub. Sugar scrubs can be used on your hands and on your entire body. They are fantastic at exfoliating your skin to eliminate dead skin cells and will leave it looking beautiful and feeling silky smooth. Make this sugar scrub by following the steps below: 1. Mix 1 cup of sugar with 1/8 - 1/4 cup of virgin olive oil or organic coconut oil. You need to get enough oil to make a good consistency, but you don’t want it too oily. 2. Mix in 5 drops of frankincense essential oil. 3. Store in an air tight container. Friends and family will be amazed at such a personal gift, and you can make several batches.
And here’s an idea...if you truly want to of fer something similar to the gift given that first Christmas night, purchase some myrrh essential oil and make one of the above beauty products using myrrh. Package the gifts in some gold paper, or add a little chocolate wrapped in golden foil. Frankincense, myrrh and gold. That will be sure to bring the spirit of Christmas to your own home, heart and to everyone that you give it to.
Have a wonderful fun-filled festive season!

You can use and appreciate this oil or give it away to your friends, or even better do both! Either way you will feel like gold this festive season. Merry Christmas!

The medicinal and health properties of tea tree has been known for many centuries through the knowledge of generations in native communities of Australia. More recently university studies have led us to further understand the benefits of this natural plant extract.
Tea tree oil has been a subject of much study among st scientists for many years. Extracted from the Melaleuca Tree, is indigenous to Northern Australia.
Arthur Penfold, a phytochemist became the curator of the Technological Museum in Sydney. He dedicated his life to studying volatile oils and the ir properties. Volatile oils are oils from plants. He did extensive research on tea tree oil and in 1923 discovered that tea tree oil was thirteen times stronger than carbolic acid. Carbolic acid at that time was a widely used disinfectant. Subsequently, in 1930 Arthur Penfold discovered the amazing the antiseptic and antimicrobial properties of tea tree oil. Much of the knowledge we know about tea tree oil can be attributed to Arthur Penfold’s work.
Research on tea tree oil still continues today. There are small studies being done by many scientists but one of the largest studies is being done by a resea ch group at the University of Western Australia. They’re conducting research to determine the extent of tea tree oil’s properties as an antimicrobial and an anticancer. The researchers have found that tea tree oil has many qualities to help battle different types of bacteria.
Some of the main topics of research include:
● How tea tree oil affects bacteria.
● Determining whether bacteria can become resistant to tea tree oil.
● Experimenting with the use of tea tree oil as a hand wash.
Recent studies have found that tea tree oil is effective in cleaning wounds and treating cold sores. Ongoing research is being conducted on whether tea tree oil is effective at treating MRSA, more commonly known as staph. Staph can occur if an infection occurs during surgery. There has been some evidence showing that tea tree oil can treat staph but more research needs to be done with a larger te st group.
Tea tree oil is also being studied as an anti-cancer. Researchers believe that tea tree oil can inhibit tumor cell growth. They’re still studying this possibility of how tea tree oil affects the tumor and how it may be used to treat cancerous tumors.
Tea tree oil has been an interesting topic of research in the past and present. While, currently there may not be any conclusions on certain studies. We do know that tea tree oil is beneficial as an antimicrobal and antibacterial agent. We hope that these ongoing studies will help determine other benefits of using this amazing volatile oil.
